A Few Facts About Elder Abuse

  • One in twenty elders over the age of 65 are abused.  One incident in fourteen will be reported.
  • There are four main categories of elder abuse:  physical abuse, financial abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect.
  • The victim of elder abuse is generally a white female, over the age of 75, who is disabled.  She lives with her abuser and depends on her abuser for her care.  She will not report the abuse and denies the abuse happened if it is reported.  Her abuser is most likely related to her.  The typical abuser is an adult son, who is the caregiver, is often a substance abuser, and is dependent on the victim financially and emotionally.
